The 1930s. Christmas Eve. In the shabby outskirts of a metropolis, a poor, destitute young woman begs in the streets to try to offer a gift to her only son. When charity doesn’t pay, she debases herself by giving in to a shopkeeper in order to obtain the gift her boy dreams of : a pair of boxing gloves. Alas, the child’s joy is short-lived : he now needs a punching bag… What follows is nothing but disappointment, cruelty, and ingratitude—like any good melodrama revealing the twisted and ever-surprising depths of the human soul.
